Reunited and It Feels So Good

The boys of Blink 182 have regrouped and are ready to rock
at Madison Square Garden on October 4th.

Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus , and the death-defying Travis Barker (remember how he survived that plane crash - ?!?!) have ended their four year hiatus to reconvene as a group and bring back the punky rock/pop music that was the soundtrack to Generation Y’s adolescence.

“To put it simply, we’re back… We mean really back. Picking up where we left off and then some,” the childhood friends have proclaimed of their reunion.

Not only are the guys of Blink 182 getting together to release a new album, but they have embarked upon a major US city tour. Of course, no tour is complete without a stop in the Big Apple, so on October 4th the guys arrive to rock Madison Square Garden alongside the likes of Fall Out Boy and The All-American Rejects.

Deli Meet

Though SoHo's hotspot Delicatessen is no secret delight, the delicious summer fare currently on their menu, plus the underrated lower level of the restaurant, just may be!

Recently, some friends and I stopped into Delicatessen in SoHo for a bite during one of our nightly escapades. Expecting to enjoy the standard upscale comfort food the eatery has become famous for in the casual-chic cafeteria style dining room on the street level, you can imagine our surprise when the hostess lead us down a flight of stairs at the inner end of the bar and into a lower level with a totally different vibe.

Even the trip down the stairs was a beautiful experience showcasing a picturesque cutout of two different levels of the city - an amazing juxtaposition between the weathered urban buildings surrounding the restaurant, and the modern feel of the clean lines and elegant simplicity of Delicatessen's "cocktail" level.

The lower level lounge is an indoor interpretation of a courtyard, the green leather couches line the perimeter like hedges and shrubbery, while the glass ceiling overhead provides a view of the real NY sky. Glance to the walls surrounding the room to find a taste of the New York City streets with an upscale-graffiti-esque mural by local artist Juan José Heredia.

Take a left at the bottom of the grand staircase and you'll find yourself in a swanky lair-like lounge. The "Mini Bar," as it is so cleverly named, boasts walls lined with tiny bottles illuminated by overhead lights, and leather couches for a comfortable place to park. It is the perfect spot to hold a private party or gathering with friends - it can hold up to 40 people for a reception-style event, or 20 for a sit-down meal.

After we enjoyed a cocktail in the underground bar, we finally made our way up to a waiting corner booth table to dive into the menu. While some of us immediately went for our reliable favorites (cheeseburger spring rolls with a ketchup-mustard sauce, sliders, and fried chicken in a bucket,) others ventured into uncharted waters with summer specials like lobster rolls, and New England Cod. Whether or not one chose a tried-and-true entrée or a seasonal sample, we all left full and satisfied!

And if all else fails - you can't go wrong with the fries!

Boom BOOM Pow

BOOM restaurant, SoHo - "Make Food Not War"

Occupying a quaint corner in the heart of SoHo, BOOM restaurant boasts sidewalk seating (for maximizing on whatever time we have left to dine outside before snow overtakes the city!), live music and an old-world European ambiance.

When I arrived at BOOM, I became immediately relaxed in the dimly lit room that was filled with the sounds of the live jazz band set up next to the bar. Though a little overpowering for conversation at times, the music mostly provided a smooth yet lively background melody. The beautiful crooning coming from the lead singer, mixed with musicians skilled on their instruments, was met with admiring applause by diners when the group was between sets.

BOOM's cuisine is mainly Italian, mixing classic recipes with modern twists and flavor combinations. With options like a beef carpaccio appetizer, various scrumptious pizza and pasta dishes, and four different kinds of bruschetta, one would think they had been dropped into a café in Florence, but look further into the menu and you will see that there is still a 10 oz. burger and fries for some good old American flavor. Don't be fooled however, though the atmosphere is cool and comfortable, the food is sophisticated, fresh, and delicious (with prices to match!). I loved my salmon filet with grilled vegetables, and my fellow diners couldn't get enough of the triangoli di ricotta pasta. And of course, what Italian restaurant would be complete without wine? BOOM offers a wide selection! Feel like splurging? Take a look at their magnum options!

A Lucky Peach in the Big Apple

Momofuku Milk Bar / Bakery serves up sweet treats, from fun-flavored milkshakes to creative cookies, with a side of childhood fantasy. Next door, Ssäm Bar presents a full lunch and dinner menu as well as a raw bar and a great variety of cocktails, all in an under-the-radar celebrity hotspot!

Nestled in an inconspicuous corner of the East Village, Ssäm Bar relies on local farms with sustainable practices to craft their popular lunch and dinner options, from small dishes, like their bbq rib sandwich with red onion slaw, to larger entrees and raw bar options. Next door, Momofuku (Vietnamese for “Lucky Peach”) Milk Bar / Bakery shines as a tasty way to end a meal or a night! Serving up imaginative desserts, like “Compost” cookies and “Candy Bar Pie,” alongside more savory items, like their daily bread selection or famous pork buns, Momofuku has all ends of the craving spectrum covered. Indulge your inner child with “Cereal Milk” flavored milk and ice cream, or opt for a more sophisticated Dulce de Leche cake. Be advised, the Milk Bar is aptly named for its lack of seating (though there are tables for standing,) and in both Ssäm Bar and Momofuku the menu changes daily depending upon season and fresh produce selection, resulting in a multiplicity of dishes to try - all the more reason to come again and again!

Bonus: Both places stay open until 2 am and Ssäm Bar recently introduced a seductive late night cocktail and light bar food menu! Stop by for late night munchies and a nightcap!

Both eateries located at 207 2nd ave. nyc 10003 | corner of 13th and 2nd

For menus and pricing see Momofuku's website

Don't miss the Crack Pie! It's delicious and insanely addicting - hence the name!
