All Aboard

The Highline opens in the Meat Packing District offering up haute Thai cuisine, and stunning retro-cruise chic décor.

Once over a mile of elevated passageway for freight trains in the 1930’s, The Highline now stands as both a park and, in the Meat Packing District, a three level entertainment space of the same name. This journey all takes place in a vintage cruise ship-style atmosphere, complete with a drained swimming pool, a.k.a. the cocktail lounge!

In addition to the pool, the space has a bar and upscale Thai food restaurant at do-able prices.

With options like lotus root chips, Thai black tuna, and coconut soup, there is something for everyone, and plenty of new things to try.

Not that hungry? Lay back and have drinks delivered to you on one of the lounge’s large beds via portable drink trays, all while you listen to the soft sound of the space’s three story waterfall.

Wanna book a private cruise? The Highline’s fun mod atmosphere is the perfect place for your next party or function

Plus, don’t miss Highline Celebrity Fridays every week!

Gone Phishing

via MetroWize.com

The long adored rock band Phish has reunited for a US tour and stop in NYC from December 2nd through the 4th at Madison Square Garden.

When they finished their farewell tour in 2004, fans of Phish’s light rock/reggae/jazz sound were devastated – that is until the group announced last year that they would reassemble for a reunion tour. Guitarist and vocalist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, keyboardist Page McConnell and drummer Jon Fishman spawned a new wave of improvisational “jam” performances when they first joined together in 1983, and now, almost fifteen years later, fans are still flocking to the group’s energetic performances and eclectic sound. From December 2nd through the 4th, the band makes their re-appearance in New York City at none other than Madison Square Garden. Tickets range from $100 to $125 at StubHub.com, and though it may seem a little pricey, is it really possible to put a price on seeing this iconic group in possibly their last performance together? Exactly.

Step into the Limelight

Limelight Marketplace – the new star of one-stop shopping!

The location of the new Limelight Marketplace has gone from a church, to a disco, and now, an indoor shopping center that some might call a religious experience. Located at the corner of 6th Avenue and West 20th Street, Limelight is the newest destination for everything from gourmet food and sweets, to jewelry, sneakers and home goods. With 3 floors of stores with finds from across the globe, plus outdoor space, a hair salon, and 2 restaurants, Limelight has everything you need to make a day out of shopping!

The first floor is home to gastronome, from gourmet and specialty markets, to sit-down eateries, plus an indoor “street of shops” with retailers like Victoria’s Secret, Hunter Boots, and Henri Bendel. Moving up, the second floor houses an apothecary, sneaker gallery and household items, while the third floor presents up-to-the-moment music and fashion.

Shop surrounded by nineteenth-century stained glass windows, which were discovered under 30 inches of drywall during construction in April, getting a hiatus from the boring white of traditional shopping centers. Limelight has a colorful past, now stop by to experience the present: a fusion of shopping, stained glass saints, and culinary samples from around the world.

Reunited and It Feels So Good

The boys of Blink 182 have regrouped and are ready to rock
at Madison Square Garden on October 4th.

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh image via blog.silive.com

Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus , and the death-defying Travis Barker (remember how he survived that plane crash - ?!?!) have ended their four year hiatus to reconvene as a group and bring back the punky rock/pop music that was the soundtrack to Generation Y’s adolescence.

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh image via thegarden.com

“To put it simply, we’re back… We mean really back. Picking up where we left off and then some,” the childhood friends have proclaimed of their reunion.

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh image via kobfm.com

Not only are the guys of Blink 182 getting together to release a new album, but they have embarked upon a major US city tour. Of course, no tour is complete without a stop in the Big Apple, so on October 4th the guys arrive to rock Madison Square Garden alongside the likes of Fall Out Boy and The All-American Rejects.

Expect a plethora of songs spanning the band’s history – and a multitude of screaming fans just glad that the legendary trio has reassembled! Show starts at 7!

Deli Meet

Though SoHo's hotspot Delicatessen is no secret delight, the delicious summer fare currently on their menu, plus the underrated lower level of the restaurant, just may be!

Recently, some friends and I stopped into Delicatessen in SoHo for a bite during one of our nightly escapades. Expecting to enjoy the standard upscale comfort food the eatery has become famous for in the casual-chic cafeteria style dining room on the street level, you can imagine our surprise when the hostess lead us down a flight of stairs at the inner end of the bar and into a lower level with a totally different vibe.

Even the trip down the stairs was a beautiful experience showcasing a picturesque cutout of two different levels of the city - an amazing juxtaposition between the weathered urban buildings surrounding the restaurant, and the modern feel of the clean lines and elegant simplicity of Delicatessen's "cocktail" level.

The lower level lounge is an indoor interpretation of a courtyard, the green leather couches line the perimeter like hedges and shrubbery, while the glass ceiling overhead provides a view of the real NY sky. Glance to the walls surrounding the room to find a taste of the New York City streets with an upscale-graffiti-esque mural by local artist Juan José Heredia.

Take a left at the bottom of the grand staircase and you'll find yourself in a swanky lair-like lounge. The "Mini Bar," as it is so cleverly named, boasts walls lined with tiny bottles illuminated by overhead lights, and leather couches for a comfortable place to park. It is the perfect spot to hold a private party or gathering with friends - it can hold up to 40 people for a reception-style event, or 20 for a sit-down meal.

After we enjoyed a cocktail in the underground bar, we finally made our way up to a waiting corner booth table to dive into the menu. While some of us immediately went for our reliable favorites (cheeseburger spring rolls with a ketchup-mustard sauce, sliders, and fried chicken in a bucket,) others ventured into uncharted waters with summer specials like lobster rolls, and New England Cod. Whether or not one chose a tried-and-true entrée or a seasonal sample, we all left full and satisfied!

And if all else fails - you can't go wrong with the fries!

Boom BOOM Pow

BOOM restaurant, SoHo - "Make Food Not War"

Occupying a quaint corner in the heart of SoHo, BOOM restaurant boasts sidewalk seating (for maximizing on whatever time we have left to dine outside before snow overtakes the city!), live music and an old-world European ambiance.

When I arrived at BOOM, I became immediately relaxed in the dimly lit room that was filled with the sounds of the live jazz band set up next to the bar. Though a little overpowering for conversation at times, the music mostly provided a smooth yet lively background melody. The beautiful crooning coming from the lead singer, mixed with musicians skilled on their instruments, was met with admiring applause by diners when the group was between sets.

BOOM's cuisine is mainly Italian, mixing classic recipes with modern twists and flavor combinations. With options like a beef carpaccio appetizer, various scrumptious pizza and pasta dishes, and four different kinds of bruschetta, one would think they had been dropped into a café in Florence, but look further into the menu and you will see that there is still a 10 oz. burger and fries for some good old American flavor. Don't be fooled however, though the atmosphere is cool and comfortable, the food is sophisticated, fresh, and delicious (with prices to match!). I loved my salmon filet with grilled vegetables, and my fellow diners couldn't get enough of the triangoli di ricotta pasta. And of course, what Italian restaurant would be complete without wine? BOOM offers a wide selection! Feel like splurging? Take a look at their magnum options!

A Lucky Peach in the Big Apple

Momofuku Milk Bar / Bakery serves up sweet treats, from fun-flavored milkshakes to creative cookies, with a side of childhood fantasy. Next door, Ssäm Bar presents a full lunch and dinner menu as well as a raw bar and a great variety of cocktails, all in an under-the-radar celebrity hotspot!

Nestled in an inconspicuous corner of the East Village, Ssäm Bar relies on local farms with sustainable practices to craft their popular lunch and dinner options, from small dishes, like their bbq rib sandwich with red onion slaw, to larger entrees and raw bar options. Next door, Momofuku (Vietnamese for “Lucky Peach”) Milk Bar / Bakery shines as a tasty way to end a meal or a night! Serving up imaginative desserts, like “Compost” cookies and “Candy Bar Pie,” alongside more savory items, like their daily bread selection or famous pork buns, Momofuku has all ends of the craving spectrum covered. Indulge your inner child with “Cereal Milk” flavored milk and ice cream, or opt for a more sophisticated Dulce de Leche cake. Be advised, the Milk Bar is aptly named for its lack of seating (though there are tables for standing,) and in both Ssäm Bar and Momofuku the menu changes daily depending upon season and fresh produce selection, resulting in a multiplicity of dishes to try - all the more reason to come again and again!

Bonus: Both places stay open until 2 am and Ssäm Bar recently introduced a seductive late night cocktail and light bar food menu! Stop by for late night munchies and a nightcap!

Both eateries located at 207 2nd ave. nyc 10003 | corner of 13th and 2nd

For menus and pricing see Momofuku's website

Don't miss the Crack Pie! It's delicious and insanely addicting - hence the name!

You Heard It Here First!

Star Trek

My run-in with Kim Kardashian AND Chanel Iman

And this time YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST! - before even Perez and E! News!

Today I was walking around SoHo when I saw a big crowd of paparazzi crowded outside the Intermix on Prince Street ... so naturally I had to see what the commotion was all about! Once I was finally in (because it was as exclusive as Bungalo 8 circa 2000 - I'm talking a bouncer at the door taking 2 people in at a time) I knew why the scene was so crazy. Walking around, first I saw teenage supermodel Chanel Iman. In person, Chanel is, first-off extremely beautiful, but without the flashing lights of the camera bulbs, and the heavy runway makeup, she looks so young and innocent. However, knowing she is only nineteen years old, her sophisticated chic-ness definitely reminds one that she is worldly, privileged, and jaded. Additionally, I never cease to be amazed by just how thin these models are - especially the young ones like Chanel - prepubescent, so no curves: no hips, no muscles, just twiggy and towering, like a bare tree in winter. But nonetheless, Chanel Iman was definitely frail but fabulous.

When I saw this underage fashion icon, I assumed that she was who everyone was peeking in on, but she was only the opening act. The main event was sexpot Kim Kardashian of the reality series Keeping Up with the Kardashians on the E! network. She is one of those celebs who doesn't seem to have really done anything to become a household name, similar to her one time bff Paris Hilton, yet she is quickly becoming a force in Hollywood - she is an example of branding at its finest! She made it on the scene by being the daughter of the late Robert Kardashian, the famout lawyer who defended O.J. Simpson a few years back, but became more buzzed about when a scandalous sex tape of her and R&B singer Ray-J (Brandy's little bro and star of For the Love of Ray-J on VH1) was leaked to the public. Recently, Kim has appeared on the cover of Playboy, been a contestant on ABC's Dancing with the Stars, and has been in a long-term relationship with NFL player Reggie Bush. On this particular occasion, the Dash doll was wearing a black one-piece jumpsuit with black patent open-toe heels. What Kim is perhaps most famous for is her heavy-duty booty (half the reason I wanted to see her was to understand the actual size of this legendary rear-end in person,) but after taking a good look, I must say that while her bum is certainly not small, I probably wouldn't have noticed it if it wasn't a big part of her celebrity identity - she just looks curva-licious, but I guess by Hollywood standards her ass needs its own manager. I came so close to asking her to take a picture with me, but was advised by my friend Amaya to keep it cool...

! Major Scoop ! This Kard-ASS-ian sported a lightened-up version of her signature dark chocolate locks - the new hue is, in my opinion, a major downgrade! As a brunette myself, I often wonder how I would look if I lightened my hair a few shades, and the new tint of K.K.'s tresses is what I picture as my worst nightmhaire! It's that orangey color that happens when rich espresso-colored haired girls try to lighten up at home, it's the sun-in gone oh-so wrong! Thank god it's only a wig! As K. Dash wrote on her blog:

"I Went Blonde! - It's a wig! Did I have you fooled? I did a fabulous photo shoot this weekend... Chuckie Amos did the hair and transformed me with this blonde wig and they put this hair piece on! I haven't taken it off since, because I'm really loving the look. I've been wearing it around New York and everyone thought it was my real hair! It's making me want to dye my hair and maybe go lighter for the summer. What do you think? Should I dye it for real?"

Please no, Kim! and I answer without hesitation! Stick with the exotic beauty look you've got going with the luscious dark look you've always had ...

Any suggestions on how a brunette can change the tint of her tresses without looking like a confused carrot top?

la bohémienne

The Frozen One

16 Handles : worship-worthy fro-yo...

Ice cream has, arguably, always been my favorite food- plain and simple. Even when I am stuffed to the point of sickness after a big dinner, I seem to always find room for the sweet treat to top it all off. Growing up, the promise of a swirl ice cream (as I so fondly called it) after a hot day at the beach always got me out of the sand and into the car. However, as most of us grow up, the joy we got as a child after ordering a smooth soft-serve atop a sugar cone has begun to evolve into anxiety over the enormous amounts of calories, fat, and sugar in our beloved summer snack. Nonetheless, I could not silence my craving - but refused to stoop down to the boring taste of frozen yogurt, thinking all I could get was that tangy white stuff with a few blueberries plopped on top, like the varieties available at Pinkberry and Red Mango. I hated that for the price of a small cup with 1 topping, I could have gone to the store across the street and bought a whole pint of ice cream without having to walk the 6 billion blocks blocks to the stores... seems like way too much effort for a sub-par product!

I had almost sworn off the fast-food frozen yogurt eateries of NYC entirely when my faith was restored by a visit to 16 Handles. From the moment I walked in I knew the yogurt gods had answered my prayers: 16 different flavors of frozen yogurt stood in front of me, and, best of all, I could take as much or as little (ya, right) as I wanted because the whole place is self-serve! From Irish Mint, to Margarita, Cookies and Cream, to Blueberry, I could mix and match whatever sounded good, plus I could even add in non-dairy sorbets, and if for some reason I did feel like having the traditional sour variety of fro-yo, I could get that too with the European Tart flavor.

The greatness of 16 Handles didn't stop at the yogurt itself though, once I had created the perfect mix of heavenly flavors (so, basically a sample of almost every kind,) I got to move on to choose from several fruits to add, from classics like strawberry, to more exoctic varieties such as papaya and mango. Last, but certainly not least were the toppings - over 30 different fro-yo enhancers like cookie dough squares, chocolate chips, mini-marshmalows, candy bar pieces, various kinds of cereal and all the sauces necessary for the perfect sundae.

When I finished assembling my dessert, while I was excited to try my creation, I was anticipating the cost of such a hefty portion of deliciousness. All of my fears were assuaged when, after placing my cup on the scale, I found that the cost of this large helping of fro-yo, fruit, and candy embellishments cost less than a "medium" with zero toppings at most other places. The last test: taste. I took my first bite and could swear it was a spiritual experience (in the realm of food)! The yogurt tasted just like ice cream but in a smoother consistency. With the high levels of calcium, probiotics, vitamins and natural cultures, you can even almost convince yourself that you're eating healthy (or at least definitely healthier than you would be if you had gone to Ben & Jerry's) - even though it'll never taste like health food! So, in short, 16 Handles made me a believer in frozen yogurt, and as a result I find myself making the holy pilgrimage, perhaps embarassingly, a few times a week - but hey, with the low cost and lower calorie count, I can go every few days without committing a nutritional sin!

So, have you found your flavor savior yet?

London Calling

LONDON CALLING

TOPSHOP Comes to NYC April 2nd !
(Celeb-studded Grand Opening April 1st)

Broadway and Broome

The British are coming! The British are coming! ... and they're bringing their high-end style at middle-of-the road prices as TOPSHOP opens its doors
to New Yorkers! Hailed by the Brits as the place to go for the latest trends without breaking the bank, the iconic store has finally made the move across the pond. Much like, H&M - the recessionista's shopping paradise (!) - TOPSHOP originated in London and, after years of anticipation and envy from the American purchasing public, the first store is opening in the continental USA. Though you won't find dirt cheap prices like those of H&M or Forever 21 you will find clothes even the rich and famous are wearing, as well as an ample shoe department! Also, unlike H&M, if you find something you like in the store but they don't have your size, you can go online to find it - and perhaps get inspired to add a few more things to your cyber "shopping cart".

Topshop has it all - from trousers, to knickers, to jumpers and everything in between!

While you're there (at the shop or online), be sure to check out the ever-fabulous clothes of Kate Moss' line for TOPSHOP! Bonus: The cheeky fashion mogul is said to make an appearance at the NYC location April 2nd to cut the ribbon for the store opening! Blimey!

AND, to celebrate the opening, TOPSHOP is offering free pampering, from hair to makeup to manicures - just be sure to sign up, I am predicting long lines for everything from complimentary services, to dressing rooms, to registers! In addition, sign up for a free meeting with a style advisor and get to sample a scone (British pastry)! PLUS: in-store DJ's like James Murphy, Justin D, the Whip! Also scheduled to appear: Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, and Santigold for the grand opening on April 1st!

Last but not least, don't hesitate to stop by any Topshop van you may see around the city! The people inside are giving out gift bags with magazines, waters, coupons, AND a mystery gift certificate to be redeemed on opening day only that may be worth up to $500!

In short, Topshop is here, and there's nothing dodgy about it! Cheerio!

Peace and Love,
